How We Compare Platforms
Every comparison on this page scores six dimensions:
- Liquidity — how much money is actually matched on the markets you care about. The deciding factor for most traders.
- Commission / Margin — what the platform charges. Exchange commission is straightforward (Betfair 5% standard, Smarkets 2%); sportsbook margin is hidden in the prices and varies match by match.
- Product range — markets, sports, in-play coverage, casino/poker, racing depth.
- Platform quality — mobile app, desktop site, ladder availability, software-API integration.
- Withdrawals and trust — how fast money leaves, how reliable the back-office is.
- Restrictions / palatability for winners — do they let winning customers continue at full stakes?
Different products win on different dimensions. We score and call each one. Where Betfair loses we say so. This pillar links to all the dedicated head-to-head sub-articles for the deep numbers; here is the executive map.
Betfair vs bet365
The biggest single comparison in the UK market. bet365 is the dominant fixed-odds bookmaker globally; Betfair runs the world's largest exchange. Most users treat them as complementary, not substitutes — but the question of which one to use for a specific bet matters every weekend.
| Dimension | Betfair (Exchange) | bet365 |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Peer-to-peer, 5% commission on net winnings | Fixed odds, ~5-7% margin baked in |
| Best odds (top sports) | Almost always best on horse racing, football top markets | Best odds guaranteed on UK/IE racing, often competitive on football |
| In-play depth | Strong but markets close on goals/big events | Industry-leading in-play, markets stay live longer |
| Streaming | Limited (some racing) | Strong streaming on football, tennis, basketball, cricket |
| Restrictions on winners | None on Exchange | Routine restrictions for consistent winners on sportsbook |
| Cash out | Manual via lay (full control) | One-click but at margin-loaded prices |
| Casino / Poker | Yes, both | Yes, both |
| Withdrawal speed | 1-3 days (cards), instant (PayPal) | Instant or 1 day depending on method |
Verdict. If you trade or want freedom from restrictions, Betfair Exchange wins. If you want to back at the best SP with BOG and watch streamed sport, bet365 wins. Most serious users keep both. The deep version of this comparison is in Betfair vs bet365: complete comparison and the dedicated comparison page.
Betfair Exchange vs Betdaq
The exchange-vs-exchange fight. Betdaq is the only other UK-licensed exchange of meaningful size, owned by Entain (Ladbrokes, Coral) since 2013.
| Dimension | Betfair Exchange | Betdaq |
|---|---|---|
| Liquidity (UK racing main markets) | £200K-£2m matched per race | £5K-£30K per race |
| Liquidity (Premier League MO) | £400K-£1m | £15K-£50K |
| Liquidity (in-play) | Deep across most markets | Thin outside top events |
| Commission rate | 5% standard, can drop with discount | 2% standard, drops to 0% |
| Premium charge | Yes (problem for big winners) | None |
| API quality | Mature, well-documented | Functional but smaller community |
| Software support | Bet Angel, Geeks Toy, Cymatic, Fairbot all work | Some software supports it, fewer options |
| Cross-listing tool | N/A | Tool to lay simultaneously on both exchanges |
Verdict. Betfair has the liquidity. Betdaq has the lower commission and no premium charge. For most traders the Betfair liquidity premium is worth more than the Betdaq commission saving — until you hit Premium Charge thresholds, at which point Betdaq becomes much more attractive. The full numerical breakdown is in Betfair Exchange vs Betdaq: liquidity battle, and our dedicated comparison page shows the full feature matrix.
Betfair vs Smarkets
Smarkets is the third UK exchange. Founded 2008, headquartered in London, fully owned independent (no big-group parent). Their pitch is the lowest commission in the market and a clean, modern interface.
| Dimension | Betfair Exchange | Smarkets |
|---|---|---|
| Commission rate | 5% standard | 2% flat (no Premium Charge) |
| Liquidity (Premier League) | £400K-£1m | £30K-£100K |
| Liquidity (UK racing) | £200K-£2m | £15K-£60K |
| Tick sizes | Smaller at certain price ranges | Different tick structure (sometimes wider) |
| Mobile app | Functional | Better-rated mobile UX |
| API | Mature | Modern REST API, easier for new developers |
| SBK (Smarkets Sportsbook) | Separate Betfair Sportsbook | Sportsbook is integrated with exchange wallet |
Verdict. If your edge is small enough that the 3 percentage point commission gap matters more than liquidity, Smarkets. If you trade big stakes on top sports where Betfair's liquidity gives you better fills, Betfair. Some traders run both: enter on Smarkets to lock in a price, hedge on Betfair where the depth is. Betfair vs Matchbook
Matchbook is a niche exchange focused on US sports (NFL, NBA, MLB) and tennis. Smaller than the big three for football and racing, but competitive on US sports liquidity. Acquired by 2025 by an Asian operator and rebuilt.
| Dimension | Betfair Exchange | Matchbook |
|---|---|---|
| Commission rate | 5% | 1-2% on US sports, 1.5% standard |
| Liquidity (UK racing) | Far deeper | Almost none |
| Liquidity (NFL Sunday) | Moderate | Competitive on US sports |
| Tennis liquidity | Best | Moderate on Slams |
| Premium charge | Yes | No |
Verdict. Specialist tool. If your edge is in US sports, Matchbook is worth the second account. If you trade UK/EU sports primarily, Betfair's liquidity advantage is decisive. Full Betfair vs Matchbook breakdown.
Betfair vs William Hill
This is an exchange-vs-fixed-odds-bookmaker comparison. William Hill is owned by 888/Evoke and remains a top-five UK sportsbook. The two products solve different problems.
| Dimension | Betfair Exchange | William Hill |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | Peer-to-peer, often best in market | Fixed odds, decent on UK racing |
| BOG | N/A (you set the price) | Best Odds Guaranteed on UK/IE racing |
| Lay betting | Native | None |
| Restrictions | None | Restrictions on consistent winners |
| Casino / Poker | Both | Casino yes, poker minimal |
Verdict. Different tools. Casual punters who want BOG and a high-street brand: William Hill. Anyone who wants to lay or trade: Betfair. Most active bettors keep both for that reason. Detail in Betfair vs William Hill comparison.
Betfair vs Paddy Power
Both products are owned by Flutter Entertainment — the same parent company. They share infrastructure but run as deliberately distinct brands. This comparison comes up often because customers wonder if there is any reason to use both.
| Dimension | Betfair (Exchange) | Paddy Power |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Peer-to-peer exchange | Fixed-odds sportsbook |
| Promotions | Modest exchange offers | Aggressive promo schedule, money-back specials |
| Tone | Straight, trader-focused | Marketing-led, brand-led, big-bet stories |
| Lay markets | Yes | No |
| Customer base | Traders, Irish/UK enthusiasts | Mass-market UK and Ireland |
Verdict. Same wallet group, different products. Use Paddy Power for promos and money-back-special angles, use Betfair Exchange for trading and laying. Full breakdown.
Betfair vs Sky Bet
Sky Bet is now owned by Flutter as well (post 2018 acquisition). It is a fixed-odds operator focused on football, racing and TV-driven specials. Strong UK presence, no exchange.
For a trader, Sky Bet is a request-a-bet provider and a Saturday accumulator product. It does not compete with Betfair Exchange on trading or lay capabilities. It does compete with Betfair Sportsbook for Saturday football tickets and UK horse racing odds, where Sky Bet's offers can be sharp.
The Liquidity Question
Liquidity is the single most-asked-about variable in any platform comparison. Numbers from a typical Saturday in May 2026:
| Market | Betfair | Betdaq | Smarkets | Matchbook |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premier League MO (top fixture) | £1.2m | £30k | £90k | £6k |
| UK racing 3.30 main race | £800k | £15k | £25k | £1k |
| ATP Slam Quarter-Final | £180k | £3k | £10k | £15k |
| NFL Sunday Night Game ML | £120k | <£1k | £8k | £180k |
Betfair leads on UK / EU sports by an order of magnitude. Matchbook leads on US sports. The other exchanges are useful as supplementary venues but cannot be primary venues at scale.
The Commission Question
Commission is paid only on net winnings in a market on Betfair. Standard 5%. Smarkets is 2%. Betdaq is 2%. The differences look big but interact with liquidity in ways that are not obvious.
Worked example: you place a £500 trade and net £100 profit on a market.
- Betfair commission: £5 (5% of £100). Net profit £95.
- Smarkets commission: £2 (2% of £100). Net profit £98.
The £3 saving is real. But: on Smarkets, the wider tick sizes at certain price ranges and the thinner liquidity often mean your entry price is worse by 1-3 ticks, which on a £500 stake can cost £2-15. Net effect is sometimes neutral, sometimes favours Smarkets, occasionally favours Betfair.
The exception that does not balance: Betfair Premium Charge. If you are a high-volume winner on Betfair, the Premium Charge can take 20-60% of your gross profit on top of standard commission. Smarkets and Betdaq do not have this. For pros, the Premium Charge is the single biggest reason to spread volume across exchanges.
Verdict by Use Case
One platform never wins for every user. Mapping the choice to the use case:
If you trade for profit (any volume)
Primary: Betfair Exchange. Liquidity, software ecosystem, no restrictions. Secondary: Smarkets or Betdaq for select markets and to spread volume below Premium Charge thresholds. Tools: Bet Angel or Geeks Toy. See trading introduction if you are starting.
If you back at long odds and want BOG
Primary: bet365 or William Hill for Best Odds Guaranteed on UK/IE racing. Secondary: Betfair Exchange for laying horses you don't want to back. Account with both.
If you want streamed sport while you bet
bet365 has the deepest streaming. Sky Bet for UK football and racing terrestrial coverage. Use Betfair Exchange separately for in-play hedging.
If you specialise in US sports
Matchbook for the exchange model on NFL/NBA/MLB. Pinnacle (not in this comparison, regulated outside UK) is the global benchmark on US sports if you can access it legally.
If you are an Irish racing specialist
Betfair Exchange — deepest Irish racing market depth. Paddy Power and Boylesports have specials worth checking. See Curragh trading guide.
